INTRODUCTION

It is invented by the French physician R.T.H Laennec in 1819 then Later not until 1851 there was a major improvement which was to make the device binaural device by Irish physician Arthur leared.

During the 1900’s binaural stethoscope commonly used as the diagnostic instrument. Till now there are many minor improvements that are made to this device to reduce weight, improve acoustic quality, and filter out noise.

DEFINITION OF STETHOSCOPE

It is an acoustic medical device for auscultation or listening to the internal sounds made by the heart, lungs, or intestines as well as blood flow in arteries and veins.human body.

PARTS OF STETHOSCOPE

  1. Earpieces- used to hear the sound accurately by attenuating outside noise.

  2. Diaphragm- used to detect the high-frequency sounds

  3. Bell- used to detect the low-frequency sounds

  4. Chest piece- also knowns as head

  5. Stem- connects the chest piece to the stethoscope tubing

WORKING

The disc and the tube of the stethoscope amplify small sounds such as the sound of the patient's lungs, heart, and other sounds inside the body.

The amplified sounds travel up the stethoscope’s tube to the earpieces that doctors listen through.

TYPES

You may wonder whether there are different types of stethoscope because it almost looks the same when viewed physically, but there are different types of stethoscopes.

Cardiology stethoscope

  • It looks like a regular stethoscope but it differs from the acoustic quality.

  • It has the ability to hear both low and high-frequency sounds from the diaphragm.

Infant stethoscope

  • It looks like neonate and pediatric stethoscope

  • The diameter of the infant stethoscope differ from regular which is around 2.6cm

Neonatal stethoscope

  • It is mostly like an infant stethoscope but it has the smallest diameter of about 2cm because it is used for newborn patients.

Electronic stethoscope

  • It helps to solve the sound problem by amplifying the sound that is obtained from the chest piece electronically and then it converts into the electric waves that are transmitted through a particular circuit and then proceed for better listening.

  • These type of stethoscope has two categories they are,

  1. Amplifying - increasing the strength of a sound.

  2. Digitizing - conversion of signal data from analog to digit

PRICING

  • Cost of the stethoscope in India varies from ₹250 to ₹50k

Popular stethoscope brands

  • 3M Littman classic III stethoscope

  • MDF Rose gold MD
